Knitting Abbreviations

Reading knitting patterns can seem like interpreting another language when you first begin, which can be daunting. Right now, “K5 yo, k2tog, ssk, knit to end” might seem like gibberish to you. But don’t worry! Keep this guide on hand so you can reference it whenever you come upon an abbreviation you don’t recognize. You will be interpreting kfb and M1R like the pros in no time.

BO: bind off

BOR: beginning of round

CO: cast on

CC: contrasting color

dec: decrease

inc:  increase

k:  knit

kfb: knit into front and back of same stitch (increase)

ktbl: knit through the back loop

k-wise: knitwise, as if to knit

k2tog-tbl: knit two together through the back loops

k2tog: knit two stitches together (decrease)

LN: left needle

MC: main color

m1 (make one): work to the place where the increase is to be made. Insert right needle into horizontal strand between the two stitches (the 2sts are: 1st from your right needle and second stitch from your left needle, look at the strand of yarn between these 2sts) and pick up one new stitch, place it on right needle.

m1l: with left needle tip, lift strand between needles from front to back: purl through the back loop of lifted stitch when on purl row / knit through the back loop of lifted stitch on the knit rows (increase)

m1r: with left needle tip, lift strand between needles from back to front: purl through the front loop of lifted stitch when on purl row / knit through the front loop of lifted stitch on the knit rows (increase)

p: purl

pfb: purl in the front and back of same stitch

pm: place marker

ptbl: purl through the back loop

psso: pass the slip stitch over

p2tog-tbl: purl two together through the back loops

p2tog: purl two stitches together

p-wise: purlwise, as if to purl

rep: repeat

rib: ribbing stitch

RN: right needle

Rnd: round

RS: right side

RSB: right side border: k1, sl1k wyif, k1

sm: slip marker

sl: slip stitch

sl1p: slip 1st purlwise

ssk: slip, slip, knit two together (decrease)

skpo: slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over the knit one

ssp: slip, slip, purl two together (decrease)

st(s): stitch(es)

st st: stockinette/stocking stitch (by knitting right side and purling wrong side).

t: times

tbl: through the back loop

WS: wrong side

WSB: wrong side border: sl1p wyif, k1, sl1p wyif

w+t: wrap and turn

wyif: with yarn in front

wyib: with yarn in back

yo: yarn over
